Sean Lloyd grew up in Philadelphia in his formative years. Southern Illinois University isn’t exactly the closest to home for Lloyd but it’s nothing he’s not used to.
“I went to prep school for my senior year of high school,” Lloyd says. “I kind of adapted to that and I kind of matured during that year.”
That maturity has led Lloyd to be more than happy with a career average of 8.9 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 1.3 apg, and 1.1 spg. Lloyd has started 65 games in his 90 game career with the Salukis and his been considered a leader for the Dawgs ever since Sean O’Brien and Mike Rodriguez graduated.
His patience, leadership, and maturity finally paid off on December 10, when the Missouri Valley announced Lloyd as their Player of the Week. The award came just days after a career-high 25 points at SEMO.
“I put the work in during the summer, I’m just blessed that it showed,” Lloyd says.
Lloyd hopefully will be able to add another piece of hardware to his trophy case by the end of the season. At the beginning of the season he said he’s aiming for MVC Defensive Player of the Year.
The clock is ticking down to graduation day for Lloyd, he’s only got another 19 regular season games remaining, one guaranteed Arch Madness game, and then who knows what the future holds for he and the Salukis. Lloyd isn’t thinking about that though.
“I’m just going day by day about it. I haven’t really thought of it as ‘The Last Ride,'” the guard says. “I’m just going out there, playing every game like it’s my last.”
