SIU Football received six National Letters of Intent and two transfers on the morning of December 19th, the beginning of the Early Signing Period.

The Salukis brought in three linebackers, three wide receivers, a tight end, an athlete prospect, and a running back.

Wide receiver Avante Cox transfers in to SIU after spending the past two seasons as part of Wyoming’s receiving corps.  Cox paired up with SIU quarterback Nic Baker in high school at Rochester High School to win the 2016 state championship.  He was ranked third in Illinois in receiving yards his senior year with 1,167.

Linebacker Tim Johns transfers from Purdue to Southern Illinois.  Johns has all four years of eligibility left.  Johns played at Greenwood High School in Indiana during high school.

Wide receiver Jordan Cox joins the Salukis after helping lead Milton High School out of Atlanta, Georgia to the 2018 7A state championship.  Cox had 23 catches for 442 yards and three touchdowns this past season.

Linebacker Will Hopkins comes from Central High School in Park Hills, Missouri.  Hopkins was a two-time MFCA Class 3 First-Team All-State selection and the 2018 conference defensive MVP with 136 tackles this past season.  He also played tight end, gaining 900+ yards in his senior season.

Linebacker Matt Brenneisan out of Sacred Heart Griffen in Springfield adds more depth for SIU.  Brenneisan had a fantastic career with 413 total tackles at Sacred Heart Griffen.  He was selected First-Team All-State in 2017 and 2018.  His senior season saw him record 126 tackles, 11.0 sacks, and five forced fumbles.

Wide receiver Branson Combs is an Evansville product that played at Reitz Memorial High School.  Combs finished his career as the fourth best in Indiana history in terms of receiving yards with a total of 3,732.  His senior season alone saw Combs catch 75 passes for 1,517 yards and 32 touchdowns.

Tight end Avery Taggert comes from Eureka High School in Missouri.  Taggert is ranked as the #2 tight end prospect in Missouri.  Taggert will also play basketball at SIU.

Athlete Tanner Corum from Knoxville, Tennessee played ball at Farragut High School.  Corum played both wide receiver and defensive back.  As a receiver, Corum caught 32 passes for 664 yards and five touchdowns.  As a defensive back, Corum had six interceptions.  He was named All-Region at both positions.

Later in the day, the Salukis also received a National Letter of Intent from running back Romeir Elliott.  The Warren Central product led his team to an IHSAA 6A state championship with 3,045 rushing yards and 38 touchdowns.
