DAWGS GET ABOVE .500 WITH BIG WIN AT COLORADO STATE; SIU 82, COLORADO STATE 67

Saluki Basketball finds itself above .500 for the first time in the 2018-19 season after an 82-67 victory at Colorado State Tuesday night, improving to 4-3.

SIU fended off the Rams’ 3-point offense in the first half with a strong presence in the paint which led to a Saluki lead of 45-40 at the half.  In the second half, the Dawgs were able to shut down the Rams on the perimeter and limit Colorado State to just 27 points as SIU marched towards an 82-67 victory.

PRESENCE IN THE PAINT

SIU’s presence in the paint was the most important aspect of the game.  With 44 points coming from down low, the Dawgs got most of their offense going in the paint.

The Salukis also had a +17 advantage on the boards with 34 total boards to CSU’s measly 17.  The Dawgs grabbed 10 rebounds on the offensive end.

BACK AT FULL STRENGTH

SIU was back at full strength and it was highlighted by Armon Fletcher’s dominance through the game.  Fletcher played 27 minutes, hit nine of his 17 shots, and scored 20 points.

Fletcher also led the game in rebounds with eight, including three offensive boards.

CONTINUING GOOD PLAY

Eric McGill’s return from injury continued to pay big dividends last night.  Playing 30 minutes, McGill scored 10 points and dished out seven assists.

The game was the first after McGill was named last week’s MVC Newcomer of the Week for his play in Vegas last week when he averaged 16 pts and 5.5 rebounds in two games last week.

WINNING RECORD

Barry Hinson now holds a winning record (2-1) over Colorado State coach Niko Medved.  The Rams head coach spent last season at Drake, beating SIU in their first meeting before the Salukis defeated Drake in the next meeting.

PIP-POCKET

Center Kavion Pippen is averaging a steal a game after notching another two steals last night.

LIMITING TURNOVERS

SIU only turned the ball over eight times.  A great number for the Dawgs who are a team that averages 15 turnovers per game.

The game’s also featured the Salukis putting up an astounding 23 assists as a team.  Those two numbers pushed SIU in the right direction for their assist-to-turnover ratio as they now have a 1.07 assist-to-turnover ratio.  Before the Colorado State game, SIU had a 0.92 assist-to-turnover ratio.

NEXT UP

SIU begins a four game set of some of their biggest regional rivalries this Saturday.  First up is a game at SIUE.  Hear that game on 101.5 CIL-FM with pregame at 1pm before a 2pm tipoff.
