This is part of a four-part series “SIU Season Starter” to serve as a primer before SIU’s first regular season game against Kentucky on November 9th

Armon Fletcher has his sights set high this season.  Fresh-faced with a new cornrow hairstyle, the preseason MVC First-Team selection wants to open eyes this year.

“I want to win Player of the Year,” Fletcher says without missing a beat. “I’ve always wanted to.  I’ve always wanted to be put in that situation.  And First-Team All-Conference, too.  I still haven’t done that.”

Fletcher has plenty to be excited about this season: Thik Bol finally makes his return and the team is returning, essentially, six starters making them one of the most experienced and deep teams in the Valley.

“I feel like everybody on our team are go-to guys,” Fletcher explains.

Plenty of opportunity to put teams in the Valley on notice in the opening weeks of the season with a season-opener against #2 Kentucky, a home-and-away series with top midmajor school Buffalo, and a likely match with #7 Nevada at the Continental Tire Invitational in Las Vegas.

“I’m excited,” Fletcher says.  “Just because of the pure fact that we haven’t beaten a Power 5 school since I’ve been here.  I feel like we’re all motivated and excited to go out there and play those guys and get some wins.”

Make sure to tune in to 101.5 CIL-FM on Friday at 5pm for pregame from Rupp Arena with Mike Reis and Greg Starrick before a 6pm tipoff.
